  *** A NOTE FOR REVIEWERS ***
Some reviewers have commented on Tstar with two negatives which i
would like this opportunity of defending. These issues surprised us
as they are opposite to what so many musicians told us they wanted.

 1. The lack of more menus, toolbars, and i guess windows. The reasoming
was simple. Many musicians told us repeatedly they found too many menus
and different windows in music confusing. In fact a lot were quite
VERBOSE about it. Thus Tstar adopted just ONE MAIN EASY WINDOW.
With now a menu for each track. Accessible via each tracks Fnn button.
Nothing could be more intuitive than clicking on a tracks record
button - just like one would do in a professional studio.
We have tried as far as possible to make functionality familiar to an
engineer working in a recording studio even down to the little
square buttons ! On-line HELP is but a button click away.

 2. The other negative comment was lack of effects.
For example echo, reverb, chorusing, flanging etc.
 Let me defend this.
It is my professional opinion that the user base of world wide
PC's does not yet have the FIREPOWER to do this.
Particularly the issue of many multiple effects on large numbers of
multiple tracks at the same time.
A lot of young musicians, for example, are using mums or dads old PC.
Maybe in 3 years by 2003 once 1 Ghz plus processors
 are widely installed.
To do DSP (digital signal processing) PROPERLY requires tremendously
 large processing power.
DSP is a tremendously mathematically intensive load on a processor.
According to our internal calculations to mix 32 tracks concurrently
while recording AND mixing in real time 3 DSP effects per track -
(96 total) probably will not just require a 1 Ghz plus processor,
but nearing 2 Ghz probably plus much faster motherboard busses.
In summary - asking us to implement this level of support in a
20 dollar package i feel is expecting a bit much given most users
 dont yet have the firepower.
I would like a vintage strat guitar or tube microphone for 50 dollars
 - but i dont know anyone making one at this price !

Also - let me say i get all sorts of effects in Tstar simply by
copying a dry track and using the shift function to shift the copy
back from the original by various milliseconds. (see TStips doc.)
let me say - i do appreciate any and all input , and will
strive to be accommodating to all viewpoints.
We ARE conducting DSP research internally - however - i will only
release new features to musicians as and when they have the firepower
 to use it.
One reviewer commented that shipping Tstar without effects
is like shipping a word processor without a spelling checker.
With respect - technically we are not comparing apples to apples
because of the issue of needing tremendous FIREPOWER for DSP/effects.
Let me also say - Tstar is not meant to be a
"do everything but the dishes and mow the lawn as well" package.
It IS meant to be a nice inexpensive way to get a few songs recorded -
particularly for musicians and recording folks
who often can only afford to record on lower power or used PC's.
*** END OF NOTE TO REVIEWERS ***
Tstar REAL TIME MIXES while recording and playing back at
CD quality. PLUS SOPHISTICATED ability to build sample rhythm tracks
 (read editor.txt for details.)
(Please note - T-star needs windows directx media run time to be
installed by the user eg : version 6.1 as well as a directsound
capable sound card for real time mixing to work properly.)
A PCI full duplex directsound capable sound card is recommended.

(Please read the TSHELP text doc (para 9) on how to record
UNLIMITED TRACKS !!, using the MX-->1/2 function,
as well as TIPS (para 1) for those with much slower PC's.).
Also - if you have an older sound card please read section 10
 of the Trouble document carefully.
To be EXETREMELY easy to use without being a huge program that
consumes your resources. Development time was 3 years.
Developer Credentials. - in the computer industry since 1968.
Degree in Physics. Worked for several hitech companies, and also
owner at various times of recording studios, and a musician with
 a deep passion for audio.

Please note : Tstar assumes a display resolution of
800 by 600 small fonts 96 dpi which is needed to display all the
 controls.
Tstar is use at your own risk.
(Please see Legal section in Why Register.Txt.)

The product came about as a result of many poor musician friends of
mine complaining they wanted a very inexpensive way of recording
lots of audio tracks for about 20 dollars. They also challenged
me to do it. So - here it is - after - i might say - too many late
nights and much technical effort !!.
Little did they realise the work involved AND grey hairs !!
After a gruelling 3 year development of too many 24 hour days -
i need a little break now folks and some time with my family who
 have rarely seen me.
One of the reasons i put so much effort into this product is, i
remember vividly when i was a young songwriter - and could not
afford to record my song ideas. NOW - its possible !!
In return - i ask musicians to help me by registering, so that
i can hire more programming talent which is very expensive and
bring you even more inexpensive goodies in this package !
I REALLY need the support - so i can give all musicians more
songwriting tools to express their ideas.

Capabilities of Tstar CD Version 4.3 now include :
 --------------------------------------------------
   ** NEW in 4.2/4.3 -
28 track multitrack capability for registered users.
new mixer screen, fader automation !
saving tk names/vols/pans, and auto configuring mixer on load.
Real time response to pan and volume settings by the user.
Fast forward & fast back. Red button plays mix from any time.
Pause and continue is now implemented by clicking on the
      elapsed time readout. Speed/latency
millisecs number is displayed in the timeline. If you hear
a track slightly off try adding 2000 to this
number and either insert or delete the total in track shift
to align track with others. If you dont hear any latency
on your system and a number displays ignore it.
Systems can vary from one to another.
Numbers less than 4ms are nothing to worry about.
Larger means you might have a slower system or drivers.
You can Click tracks Fnn and use track shift to synch tracks.
(Read section 10 of trouble.txt for more info on getting
      perfect track synch.)
** expanded area for editing, new faders,
track menu via Fnn buttons, and various other upgrades.
** Real time Multitrack mixing while recording at CD quality
      44.1Khz 16 bit !!
** Record in stereo now as well as mono.
** Mixdown to a stereo CD quality 44.1Khz 16 bit master.
** The most EXCITING feature is the ability to record as many
tracks as you desire ie : UNLIMITED TRACKS !!
      ( see Tips.txt for a full explanation).
** The ability to shift tracks relative to each other.
This allows you to compensate for the inevitable small delay
that occurs when recording using headphones,
and also where a sound card might have a slight driver delay,
or you experience latency. (Please see HELP for details about
using the NEW Fnn (Track Functions) button on each track.)
To effectively solve any problems due to latency or tracks out
of synch. Fnn now brings up a selection menu.
** "Punch-in" record and playback from different times other than
      zero !!
** Easy access to your favorite audio editor for advanced editing,
the windows mixer for checking sound card settings, explorer for
copying tracks, mixes, and backing up, and notepad for session
      notes.
** NEW ADVANCED EDITING within TS - which displays now all track
waveforms, and lets you silence out very quickly
parts of audio tracks you dont want. eg : that noisy guitar amp
between those great licks you played !! ( see EDITOR doc. which
also has a tip on how to see if your a low noise environment.)
You can also edit down to individual track seconds.
NEW FEATURES in Tstar let you cut, copy, and paste in
same track or different tracks. To display a new tracks
waveform for using these functions just click its Fnn.
PLUS ability to make rhythm tracks from samples eg : tekno.
You can reverse a section of audio, using RR.
** A function to easily record tracks using simple keyboard
keys with a delay - to allow you to get comfortable with your
instrument. ie : "mouse free recording" as its difficult to
hold your instrument and also mouse click at the same time !!
      (F1 to F12).
** A TIP : I have also added a small feature to let you
easily insert audio from outside the program.
Just make sure its the TS format, and copy it to the Mysong
folder and re-name it as a valid TS track id : ie : a spare
T01 thru' T14 - ie : a FREE TRACK. The next time you boot up
TS the Rec box will be blue - and you will be able to mix
it in with your other tracks in the song. This makes insert
      a QUICK process.
** More sophisticated auto detection of delays in older sound
      cards.(see section 10 of TROUBLE).
** HELP is now "on-line". Click on HELP - and by clicking a
button on the display - its help will display.

I have included an example Track sheet for those new to recording.
Just a note. I meet some folks new to recording who
believe getting every last piece of equipment will ensure them
a hit record. Were it so easy.
Many major engineers will tell you - build engineering chops.
This is all to do with hard work, and memorable song "hooks".
Tstar is all you need to make good songs together with a good
powerfull PC, a low noise sound card, and a few decent
mics and instruments. I will be glad to help any newcomers to
recording via the Tstar discussion forum. (see HELP for URL.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
2. PEOPLE WHO MIGHT USE T-STAR.
-------------------------------
Home Recording studios, multimedia folks, effects
creators, weekend musicians, guitarists, keyboard players,
songwriters - children or adults alike.
In fact anyone who wants to record a small song with lots of tracks,
using a VERY EASY TO USE program.
T-star is particularly good at allowing you to get small song
ideas down, and only costs 20 dollars !!.
You might say - well ONLY 20 dollars - it cant be THAT GOOD.
Give it a try - you might be surprised !!
PLEASE SEE THE SPECIAL OFFER IN Why Register.Txt !!(Section - 4).

As there are so many different configurations of PC - TS is use
at your own risk. (Please see Legal - Para 5 of Why Register).
You are allowed one full week to see if TS works well on your
configuration - after which you are requested to register, or else
delete the program from your system.
Please ensure you have a Full Duplex sound card installed in your
PC - and properly configured - before starting TS.
Also - ensure you have installed the latest Full Duplex drivers.
Most sound card manufacturers have internet sites you can download
updated software drivers from. Please consult your documentation -
which will identify the manufacturers internet address.
( please see Trouble.txt for configuring your system for audio).
As folks say they dont like crippling in trials - i thought i
would see how the market reacts to a product with no crippling in
 its trial period.
This issue is a real catch-22 for the developer as - one DOES have
to make a living. So - PLEASE register - so us developers can
believe that cripple free trials work !

Look at the pluses of purchasing TS :
** the opportunity to record - for those who could never afford it
before, and produce a CD quality stereo mixdown master - which you
can input into any MP3 or CD burning program.
** record as long as you like, as many times as you like.
(as long as you have the disk space.)
** Unlimited tracks at CD quality and lots of NEW editing features.
** The digital recording tips alone are worth 20 dollars.
And come from many years of recording experience.
** the price of a meal out.
** a developer who REALLY CARES and is a musician who understands
all the intricate issues we face in our songwriting and recording.
In summary folks - please be fair in return by registering the
product if you use it. I DO have a family to look after.

The program might not have every last feature.
But - 20 dollars IS a cheap price to pay for getting
your ideas down NOW. One could wait forever for that perfect program,
and still not get anything down !
Worst case it allows you to perfect your song ideas NOW
 - and seeing what works - before possibly taking your band into
a studio to record your album.
T-star CD is ideally suited to the songwriter who wants to
get the ideas down and mix to cassette or dat - and then play to
 his/her fellow band members.
Or - for a small band recording their first songs.

To those who might be critical of the lack of a certain feature -
please be aware - we are the MOST CRITICAL OF OURSELVES.
So if you dont like something - write to the registration address,
and we will try and correct it.
But - please be aware - there are just certain features that are
very difficult to implement within the current state of the art
 - even for us developers with thirty years experience building
computer systems. I have built many major computer applications in
my time for large companies costing millions - and let me tell you
folks - this was my biggest technical challenge.
Probably - thats why i was silly enough to attempt it !

During the development of TS we had to strike a very delicate
balance between ease of use, sophistication , but also ever mindfull
that users wanted a low price, operational stability, AND from our
canvassing of musicians did not want a huge program.
Also we were constrained by the fact that not everyone has the most
powerfull systems available, or a large capacity for mixing of audio.
This made it all the more difficult.
In summary - it was a very delicate balancing act given the goals.
So - to those who might be critical - and have not developed software
 - please bear these issues in mind.
If you have never developed software, please feel free to try your
 own audio program.
Then - after the first few weeks of many 24 hour days that seem to
stretch forever and low level technical work - i guarantee you will
just begin to understand the many significant challenges involved.
And that TS - even with its foibles - is a fabulous deal for the
musician who could never afford to record before.

As a humurous aside several friends of mine who are as technically
capable as myself told me - when they saw what was involved -
"lifes too short" - i'd sooner buy the program from you !
In summary - if you have criticism - just write - and we will try
 and build the feature in.
But please - have a little respect for the major technical and other
challenges and issues we had to address as well as the sheer work
involved to bring this type of product to market at this price.
If you are critical - but you feel you can use the program, and we
might have something going for us - the best you could do is help us
 by registering.
Heres why. In coming versions - we want to attempt some very difficult
challenges and implement new features which are extremely complex
technically to accomplish. Some of my best technical peers feel
a few are impossible to accomplish. But i've been told this before -
and overcome the technical issues. As ma' granpappy used to
say - "where theres a will theres a way" !!
To do certain so called "impossible features " will require adding
more highly qualified folks that dont come cheap.
In summary - the sooner we can build further our technical team to
implement these very difficult features, the sooner we can get
them back out to musicians. If registrations trickle in - then
we are only able to trickle upgrades out - as we cant add to our team
as fast as we would like. However - if we get a lot of support from
musicians out there - then musicians will benefit more quickly,
 - as we can build technical strength more quickly.
In summary - please support us with your registrations.
 We REALLY DO CARE !!

3. DOCUMENTATION SUPPLIED.
--------------------------
I have supplied the following Help files and documentation which
is VERY extensive and was developed with the idea that a lot of
folks might be new PC owners and new to digital recording :
 (Also see NEW ON-LINE HELP.)
 * - Intro.txt - this introduction.
 * - Editor.txt - how to use the built in editor.
 * - TSHelp.txt - the main help file accessible within TS
by clicking the HELP box. Although most features are self
explanatory when you use TS. This will help further.
 * - TSTips.txt - tips on getting the best out of TS - and
recording tips in general to do with PC audio recording.
 * - Trouble.txt - which starts off with a checklist to ensure
your PC is properly set up to record digital audio.
Followed by specific troubleshooting tips to problems.
 * - Why Register.Txt - which covers the reasons why you should
register the program, a registration form, and a legal section.
 * - Registration Form.Txt for registering.
 * - an example track sheet.
Please read all these documents carefully to ensure you get the
very best out of TS. Just click on the document icon in the dir -
and the doc will display in Notepad.
Please note - for folks new to the PC world - in these docs -
when i use the word Click - in some cases - in Windows you
might have to double-click with the mouse.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
2. BEFORE STARTING T-STAR.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
   1. Please ensure you have a proper Sound Card installed that is
full duplex(FD). ie : Can record and playback AT THE SAME TIME.
A lot of newer PC's come with this installed - but yours
      might not have one installed.
Without a FD sound card. TS will not be able to function.
Also please ensure your resolution is 800 by 600 small fonts
      96 dpi.
One of the earliest problems folks with a new PC have is -
they record - bring up the waveform display - and
its BLANK !! Wheres my waveform they say ?? This can also
happen if you just installed a new sound card.
If this happens to you - dont worry. Bring up your soundcards
mixer - and you will probably see line in or recording is muted.
Unmute it. Same for playback. Also MAKE SURE your left and
right sound card line inputs are ACTUALLY CONNECTED from
      your mixer or preamp !!

   2. At a minimum if you are a new computer user. Click on
      START in Win 95 -->SETTINGS-->CONTROL PANEL-->then click
on Multimedia. Up will come a Dialogue called
MULTIMEDIA. Check to see your sound devices are installed.
      For example -
WAVE In (record) and WAVE out (playback). Or something similar.
   3. To check you are Full Duplex ie : can record and playback
at the same time. As before - get to CONTROL PANEL - then
instead click on SYSTEM --> a SYSTEM PROPERTIES DIALOGUE
will appear. Click DEVICE MANAGER. Then click Sound,Video
controllers. Now click on the 16 bit audio section or
equivalent. Make sure it says exists is checked - then click
on the tab that says SETTINGS. And ensure V. IMP - you see a
box that is checked that says ALLOW FULL DUPLEX OPERATION.
If you are unsure if your full duplex or if you even have a
sound card installed, or if you are new to the PC - consult
a PC dealer you deal with or your friendly neighborhood PC guru !
Dont touch these settings if you are not familiar with them.
Enlist the aid of a PC tech.
Dont despair - once you have the sound card properly set up -
TS is a lot of fun.
   4. Please make sure you have enough DISK SPACE !!
Your disk should be uncompressed for digital recording, and FAST.
One song alone with lots of tracks can use hundreds of
megabytes. This is true of any recording software you use -
not just TS. Check your disk space regularly by clicking on
My computer icon - and then the disk drive icon.
   5. Please note - as we cant test on every single PC out there -
should you ever get into some sort of runaway situation -
and the program is not responding - just do the old
(on your keyboard) trick of holding down TOGETHER the
Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys, and click on END TASK in the pop-up
dialogue to end the recording or mixing task.
This has not happened yet. But - its just a fail safe
in case it ever does on your particular configuration.
Also - please note - on slower configurations - probably -
you might want to limit yourself to songs of 3
minutes duration max - due to the time to mix the tracks.
Mixing time considerations should melt away over the next little
while - as PC's become ever more powerfull.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
3. STARTING TS FOR THE FIRST TIME.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
You initiate T-star one of two ways.
Either - on the start menu.
      (START >> Programs >> T-star >> click "Tstar").
OR by going to the directory labelled
"Tstarcd" using Windows explorer and clicking on the red
      Tstar.Exe icon. I used the "T" icon - as i drank thousands
of gallons of tea while i was developing T-star !!

You should immediately see a colorfull display that looks
just like a Mixing Console. This should be very familiar
to all musicians and recordists ! I hope you like it.
And i remain open to any design changes you - the users
of TS - would like implemented. You need only write !
A contact address is in Why Register.txt.
Now proceed to click on the HELP box once you boot up TS
to learn how to easily use T-STAR.
If the application detects that you dont have sound configured
or your screen res' is not 800 by 600 - it will normally
tell you. In this case simply click in the "X" in the top right
hand corner of the mixer window and leave the application and
then configure your system for full duplex sound and/or the
proper screen res'. You can move the main mixing display -
if you want to by holding down and dragging the mouse on the
      blue line at the top.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
4. GENERAL WAY OF WORKING WITH THE APPLICATION.(see HELP for details.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
      1. Record 14 tracks. ( clicking rec boxes then STOP for each
track at end of recording). Starting at Track T01.
Please note : T01 is the only track that needs to be
recorded for the FULL LENGTH OF THE SONG. (eg : a click).
T-star needs it as a referance.
After recording each track - set pan & vol.
And click the Fnn button to display the tracks waveform.
A PLETHORA of new features and buttons to use
are displayed for your editing pleasure. ( see Editor.txt).
Hit PLAY to hear the tracks you have recorded which will
be mixed in real time using the pan and vols you have set.
If a track is not quite "spot on the groove" use the shift
function.(Click on the tracks "Fun" button.)
Use Fnn to delete and solo individual tks/waveforms and synch
         tracks.
Tracks recorded on show as blue rec boxes.(Rnn)
         Free tracks are red.
If a track is not quite in synch - use the Fnn track
function to insert or delete blank samples for that track.
At any point when STOPPED - you can do a MIXDOWN - by
clicking. T-star will now create a stereo master for you.
Click MP (Master Mix Play) to start/stop stereo master
playback. Please click MP - at least ONCE after MIXDOWN
as this ensures you are CD quality.
At any point while stopped you can now edit any of your
recorded tracks just by holding the left mouse button
down on any displayed audio, dragging to the right, and letting
         up on the button.
      2. After recording all 14 tracks - if you want to do more -
ie : a second pass to record one or more tracks,
ie : adding more tracks to the mix of 14 , its easy.
Just do a copy of the Mysong folder to a new folder on a
back-up device and give it a name. DONT DEL Mysong.
Then click the MX-->1/2 - which will split the mix of
14 tracks from the first pass in Mysong to tracks 1 & 2.
NOTE - overwriting what was there before on 1 & 2.
Now start the second pass of recording tracks.
Start at track 3 and delete it. Then click its rec box
(ie : R03). T04 to T14 the same. STOP always stops track
         recording.
And away you go again up to track 14 - recording and mixing.
You can repeat this cycle as many times as you want -
and as many tracks as you want for UNLIMITED TRACKS !!
New for registered users , at any point after
recording T01 you can now click the T1528 button to record
         on tracks 15 to 28 - giving 28 tracks in total !!
You could now record 56 tracks by playing the mix of 28 in
real time to a dat or high quality mastering machine, then
recording the stereo mix of 28 tracks back into Tstar or
even using your favorite editor saving the left channel as
T01 and the right as T02 - then add 26 more tracks !!
So now you dont have to use MIXDOWN if you dont want to ,
you can output straight to a mastering deck !!
When you have recorded 28 tracks (or however many you need)
just click PLAY , and the master stereo mix of 28 tracks
is output from the stereo line out of the sound card.
Please NOTE - clicking MIXDOWN only creates a mix of the
first 14 tracks on disk due to the time to mix on the
average PC. But a NEAT TRICK is to use tracks 15 to 28
to say lay your beds down, then tracks 01 to 14 for
unlimited overdubbing using MIXDOWN and split.

After you have used TS a little bit - i sincerly hope
you like its ease of use. No complex menus to navigate.
No complex commands. No complexities in finding out
how one records or plays back. NO COMPLEXITIES !!
A review has commented about the lack of more menus.
This was purposefull - as so many musicians have told me
they want simple button click interfaces, and fewer display
      screens. Many displays confuse them.
If you have any ideas for improvement - once again -
just write and make suggestions. I tried very hard to
make this the ABSOLUTE EASIEST recording software to use.
But feel free to suggest. I am hoping T-star will
become YOUR PACKAGE. And i intend to be fully
      responsive to YOUR NEEDS.
TS is, and will be, a continually evolving package.
It is being worked on all the time. As new features are
added, new versions will be posted on internet download sites.
      (Winsite.com and zdnet.com downloads)
A mechanism is built into the package so that when a
registered user downloads a new version from an internet site -
new features will be fully available to use without any further
payment. ie : there is no upgrade charge after the initial $20.
This will remain untill 2003. After this point - any upgrade
charges will be minor - and basically cover the hiring and
on-going salaries of added programming talent, and special
new development platform environments. (Please see
      Why Register.Txt for further info).
As users request certain features, they will be added
providing it is humanly technically possible to implement
      them within the PC architecture.
As PC architecture advances certain features will become
more possible. In summary - if it can be done - i will try and
      do it !!
Please read my innermost thoughts in Why Register.Txt -
and you will see why i need your support and registration
      fee of 20 dollars !!

Now - go and have FUN recording !!
